Getting Tested for Corona – When, Where, and How?

As the world battles COVID 19, the number of infected people continues to grow. Widespread testing and contact tracing have been identified as being key to identifying cases of infection and controlling the spread of the highly infectious disease. With the total number of cases in India crossing the 2 lakh mark, many people with the typical flu-like symptoms are looking to consult ENT specialists in Delhi and other places or get tested for the virus. However, not everyone needs to be tested, especially if they do not have any symptoms and have not been exposed to the virus.

When Should You Go for the Test?

In case you have been in contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19, or you live in a community that has been classified as a ‘Red Zone’, you need to get in touch with a health care provider if you develop the typical COVID-19 symptoms. They will decide whether or not you need to get tested. If you have been in close contact with a person that has since tested positive for the virus you will most likely be advised to get tested even if you have not developed any symptoms. If you fall in the age bracket above 60 and have underlying health conditions, including diabetes, chronic lung disease, or cancer, you will be considered a testing priority.

Methods of Testing

The sample collection for COVID-19 testing is done by inserting a 6-inch swab that resembles a q-tip in one nostril at a time and rotating it several times. It is inserted in the cavity between the nose and the mouth and then sent to the lab for testing. This is called viral testing, which determines a current infection. Another type of testing is antibody testing which is a blood test that reveals any previous infection. One drawback to antibody testing is that it might not detect any current infection as antibodies may take 1-3 weeks to develop after contracting the virus.
